Jesus Our Table Guest: An Order of Family Prayer by Emanuel Greenwald

“If ever family prayer is to be generally practiced in our families… it must be offered whilst the members of the family, old and young, are sitting around the table at the morning or evening meal. …when all are sitting at the table… it is not difficult to have family prayer.

“This little manual is specially prepared for use in this way. Let a copy be placed beside each plate and before each guest, and, opening at the regular week of the Church year, let the form here laid down be gone through with by all joining in the parts assigned them.

“It is very desirable that ‘the voice of rejoicing and salvation" should be heard in all “the tabernacles of the righteous.’” — Rev. Emanuel Greenwald

“A good man and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith.” Emanuel Greenwald (1811-1885) trained under the renowned Dr. David F. Schaeffer, “walking 14,000 miles in getting his education”, and was licensed by the Maryland Synod and then the Joint Synod of Ohio. Rev. Greenwald was the first president of the Board of Trustees of Capitol University, Columbus and established the first English Lutheran church of Columbus. As first editor of the Lutheran Standard he fought the “New Measures”.
